Analysis

For every 3 inhabitants in Bogotá there is half a tree, with a large variation between localities. While in Santa Fe there are about 2 trees for each person, in Bosa 7 people must share a tree. Worldwide, the WHO has recommended a minimum of one tree for every 3 people in cities. In Bogota only Santa Fe, Teusaquillo, Chapinero and La Candelaria have enough trees to comply with the recommendation. According to Treepedia (MIT's Senseable City Map city tree cover observatory) cities need more trees because they help reduce urban temperatures by blocking shortwave radiation and increasing water evaporation. By creating more comfortable microclimates, trees also mitigate air pollution caused by everyday urban activities. Their absorbent root systems also help prevent flooding during heavy rains. Caem, a subsidiary of the CCB, works in urban forestry with the Yo ya Planté program.
