Analysis

In the 2019 index, Colombia climbs seven places globally and currently ranks 55th out of 140 economies. In South America, it ranks 5th behind Brazil, Peru, Argentina and Chile. The country improved or was maintained in 10 of the 14 pillars of the index: price competitiveness, environment and sustainability, infrastructure and air transport, land and port infrastructure, availability of ICT, safety, health and hygiene, labor market, prioritization of tourism and international openness. Colombia's strengths, according to the index, are in price competitiveness, where it ranks 29th worldwide and first in South America, thanks to low hotel prices and airport taxes. According to the report, Argentina, Peru, South Africa, Indonesia and Colombia score in the top 20 in the natural and cultural resources sub-index. Colombia also has challenges in the aspects of business environment and security, where it ranks last in South America.

Description

The Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index is an initiative of the World Economic Forum, which has been conducted every two years since 2006 to measure the factors and policies that enable the sustainable development of the tourism sector and contribute directly to the development and competitiveness of countries. The analysis presented in the 2019 report is based on a methodology that integrates the latest statistics from international organizations and a survey of executives.
