The satellite account of culture and orange economy of Bogota allows measuring the added value generated in the productive process of economic activities associated with culture and orange economy, grouped in three areas: arts and heritage, cultural industries and functional creations.
This DANE publication broadens the scope of the Bogota Culture Satellite Account by incorporating the economic activities associated with the creative industries, which combine the creation, production and commercialization of goods and services protected by copyright.
Thus, the orange economy and culture decreased in 2020 in Bogota. The aggregate value of the orange economy decreased 8.2 % compared to 2019; this drop arises after a period of growth between 2018 and 2019 by standing at 0.6 % and 2.0 %, respectively. The above is due to the orange economy and culture which were among the most affected sectors during the pandemic.
The three areas of the orange economy and culture decreased; in this way, arts and heritage and cultural industries turned out to be the main affected by having an annual variation in 2020 of -13.2 % and -25.9 %, respectively. This is understood as the effect of the pandemic on this economic sector that depends, for the most part, on face-to-face events, consumption of second or third necessity goods and services that were interrupted by the confinements within the framework of the sanitary emergency.
However, the pandemic had a lesser impact on the orange economy division, which intensively supported people's adaptation to the new context. Thus, the area of functional creations had a decrease of 0.7 % in 2020, being mainly driven by the subdivision of digital media and software which grew 10.3 % in 2020, but was dented by the decrease of the other two subdivisions of design and advertising by decreasing 14.7 % and 23.8 %, respectively.
Despite the effects of the pandemic, Bogota continues to be the main axis of the orange economy and culture in the national total; its share decreased by only 0.4 percentage points (pp) between 2019 and 2020, going from 60% share to 59.6%. This shows that Bogota is the main axis of development of the orange economy and culture in Colombia, by sustaining for more than three years with more than half of the added value of the orange economy and culture in the country.
In addition, the divisions' share of the total orange economy and culture has changed over the years. While the arts and heritage division has remained between 10 % and 12 % since 2018, the cultural industries division has decreased its share by 5.3 pp from 2018 to 2020, and the functional creations division has increased its share by 6.8 pp since 2018. Thus, in the last year, functional creations accounted for 70.1 % (5.7 pp more than in 2019) of the total orange economy, followed by cultural industries with 19.6 % (4.4 pp less than in 2019) and ending with arts and heritage accounting for 10.3 % (1.3 pp less than in 2019).
