The Jardinerito Route
Fusagasugá - Alto de San Miguel - Sibaté - Alto del Romeral - Sibaté
Level of complexity: ◉◉◉◉◎
It is famous for the ascent of the Alto de San Miguel, a first-class mountain prize that used to be the training place of Lucho Herrera, considered by many the best climber in the world in the 80s. The 'Jardinerito', so nicknamed because of his trade in the cultivation of flowers in his family, rode again and again these steep mountains until he became the champion who became a legend.
The 55-kilometer route begins in the city of Fusagasugá, in the department of Cundinamarca. Afterwards, it takes a detour to Las Delicias and Usabá in the rural area of Sibaté, where the emblematic strawberry crops that characterize the municipality are located. It is, without a doubt, a good opportunity to graduate as an amateur cyclist and sharpen your legs on one of the most iconic climbs in the country. It is also the perfect excuse to explore the most representative places and flavors of the Sumapaz region. You can start your experience by staying in Fusagasugá in one of these hotels: Hotel Catama, Hotel Madaura or Hotel Boutique Sinaí, whose prices range from mid to high. The following morning, we recommend stopping by Tayrona Café, a cozy place, diagonal to the main park, where you can find a wide range of products derived from the most excellent coffee grown in the region. If you have time, before starting your journey, stop by the monument in honor of Lucho Herrera. It is located on the Fusagasugá bypass. It is a bronze sculpture, about seven meters high. It has its arms raised and recreates the feat achieved by the Jardinerito in the Vuelta a España, when he was proclaimed champion in 1987. A photo not to be missed. The route begins in a sector of temperate climate, at an altitude of 1,870 m/snm and an approximate temperature of 22 °C, so it is very important to stock up on enough liquid and a couple of energy bars that, in ramps like this, are never superfluous. The first eight kilometers are characterized by a kind of zig-zag with small slopes of no more than 4% inclination. It is at kilometer nine, one before reaching the village of La Aguadita, when the port begins with a steady climb above 6% and an intermediate ramp of 13%. The next two kilometers are a false flat that should be taken with calm to face the final slope. But first there is the hamlet of Agua Bonita or the sector known as "Quesos", which is part of the municipality of Silvania. There you will find several places to recharge your energy with an aguapanela, an arepa and the best cheese made by the people of the region, ideal for the 2,288 m/snm over which you are traveling at this point of the route.

After the break comes the final and most demanding part of the climb. A kilometer and a half at 6.5%, a last break and from then on the slope does not stop. Two kilometers above 7 and 8%, then a couple of horseshoe bends at 6% and a four-kilometer finish with ramps ranging from 8% to 14% incline, before reaching the top of the San Miguel pass or "cuchuco" pass, as it is also known for the famous soup with backbone that can be found in the Alto del Cuchuco restaurant. Platazo! The records that are known speak of a record in the ascent of this port of 47 minutes and 25 seconds achieved by Francisco Pacho Rodriguez, the renowned cyclist from Boyaca who was third in the 1985 Tour of Spain, and followed by his countryman Miguel Angel Superman Lopez with a time of 47 minutes and 35 seconds. Next, a nine-kilometer descent to Sibaté, but be careful, if you have good legs, you will immediately encounter the roughness of the Alto del Romeral (another road). This pass has been the scene of several local and national cycling competitions, including the Clásica de Fusagasugá and the Vuelta de la Juventud. Its sharp and extremely difficult curves make the ten kilometers of ascent really strenuous. A first stretch of three kilometers between 8 and 9.5% inclination, then continue with a small stretch of up and down, and finish with five very hard kilometers in ramps ranging from 11 and up to 18%, will take you to crown this port at 3,333 m / snm. To regain strength we recommend the Romeral Bless Point store, designed especially for cyclists who come to this high point. There you will find empanadas, sandwiches, boiled eggs, drinks and red wine, as well as bike racks and a restroom for visitors. What remains is to return along the same route to the municipality of Sibaté, where you can finally explore the diverse gastronomic corridor. A highly recommended place is the restaurant La Kamelia, 300 meters from the tunnel of the old road to Fusa and, of course, the famous strawberries with cream of Flor Marina Joya, in her store El Rosal.
Flying goal:
You cannot leave this place without visiting the San Rafael Natural Park, a reserve located in a rural area of the municipality of Fusagasugá, inspection of La Aguadita, via Sibaté. There you can enjoy the imposing landscape that extends from the La Honda waterfall, the dense cloud forests and streams that descend from the neighboring Sumapaz páramo feeding the Barro Blanco river basin. Finish at the Colinas de Barro Blanco restaurant, located on the side of the road that connects the village of La Aguadita with the municipality of Sibaté. A place with natural beauty where you can accompany a good plate of trout or grilled meat with the sound of several lakes and streams.
