Milk route
Ubaté - Carmen de Carupa - Ubaté
Level of complexity: ◉◉◎◎◎
The historical and patrimonial center of the municipality of Ubaté is the prelude to the 14.8 kilometers of cycling to Carmen de Carupa, the highest municipality in the department of Cundinamarca, at 2,980 meters above sea level. In total, 29.6 kilometers counting the round trip, in which sweat, effort and tenacity are complemented by the fraternal company of nature, the peasant tradition of the milking trade and the more than 34 species of birds that live in the vicinity of the region.
The 29.6 kilometer road begins in the municipality of Ubaté, in the department of Cundinamarca, a stronghold of agricultural, livestock and especially dairy activity in the Andean region. With a production of close to 70 thousand liters per day and the capacity to supply 30% of Bogotá's demand, it is known as the dairy capital of Colombia. There, 95 kilometers north of the capital, visitors will find numerous crops of corn, carrots, strawberries, blackberries and peaches, as well as an impressive colonial legacy printed in churches and buildings anchored in time. It is a place to walk around calmly and in between times savor the tastiest dairy products. For this, Ubaté has a wide range of hotels ranging from hostels with shared rooms to five-star hotels, where you can enjoy comfortable facilities for a pleasant rest during your stay in the municipality. The prices per night are mid-range (Hotel Zaclordy) and high (Hotel Casa Yunque, which is on the road and offers cycling plans to its visitors). The tour starts at the main park Los Libertadores, in the historic center of the municipality. There you will find the Basílica Menor de El Divino Salvador, characterized by its French Gothic architecture and baroque style in the interior. Thus begins this route of will and conviction. You can also start the route from the Plaza Ricaurte, where you can park your vehicle, in addition to having a wide gastronomic offer. Leaving Ubaté you will find the Franciscan Convent of San Luis, an old cloister dating from 1924 and named in honor of San Luis de Tolosa. Until there enjoy a quiet pedaling that invites you to save energy for the steep slopes ahead. At 2.2 kilometers from the convent, you will find the restaurant La Cabaña, a cozy place to take a first break and enjoy the delights of traditional Colombian food.

A little less than a kilometer later, very close to the El Guacal Ecological Park, the ascent begins with small inclines of 5 and 6%. At this point the birdsong is combined with the pedaling, while on the route the demand increases in steps. At kilometer 8 of the route you will find the first section of hardness. About 400 meters with ramps between 9 and 11% of inclination will test your endurance and will serve as a preamble to crown a small port at 2,820 m/snm. Then comes a descent of approximately 2 kilometers, however, before continuing on the road, you have the option of visiting the Chapel of Cerro de Chengua, a sanctuary in honor of the Virgin of Carmen, from where there is a great scenic view of Carmen de Carupa and its surroundings. Nearby (six kilometers away), you can also visit the Embalse del Hato Forest Park, a perfect place for ecotourism, sport fishing and water sports. It is an ideal place to spend time with the family and recharge with the energy of nature. Later, from kilometer 12 to Carmen de Carupa, the slope is maintained. In this part of the route there is a climb of 11% of inclination, one kilometer before arriving to the municipality, being this the most complex part of the route. Once in Carmen de Carupa, we recommend you to go for a good chocolate and a delicious almojábana at the Peter Pan bakery and pastry shop. Nothing will fall better than that in the highest and coldest municipality of the department. In addition, you can go to see the sheep wool handicrafts in the center of the municipality and learn about the craft of weaving, inherited from the Muisca indigenous tradition. Another alternative, before heading back to Ubaté, is to visit the Guargua páramo, where you can enjoy the majestic view of the Laguna Verde, a truly impressive place where the large valleys of frailejones and the majestic lagoons that meet each other are a natural spectacle. On the way back to Ubaté it will be 14.8 kilometers again, but this time with less intensity and demand. Most of the ride will be downhill so it is important to check your brakes and if you have a windbreaker jacket it is time to put it on, you will surely appreciate it in the middle of the descent. Arriving in Ubaté this route ends, and there is nothing better to close than to stop by the Ricaurte Park or the Municipal Market Square, where the famous chicken dish, the picadas and the fritanga (fried food) that are famous among tourists are waiting for you. Or if you prefer, you can visit the traditional pastry shops La Marsella, founded in 1950, and San Antonio, famous for its classic onces accompanied by local cheese.
Flying goal:
Lovers of mountain biking or nature walks can visit La Teta hill in Ubaté. The ecological trails plus the view offered by the hill make this place a great tourist attraction. The price of the hike ranges from $75,000 to $80,000 and lasts four hours during which you can breathe fresh air, get in touch with nature and enjoy a relaxing view to escape from routine. Finally, do not forget to visit the chapel of Santa Barbara in the south of the municipality of Ubaté. It is a sacred colonial style temple built in honor of Santa Barbara, advocate of thunder. From its viewpoint it is possible to appreciate the panoramic view of the village of San Diego de Ubaté with a 360 degree view. A postcard to frame.
