Around the block route
Chía – Tenjo – Tabio - Chía
Level of complexity: ◉◉◎◎◎
The savannah of Bogota is the protagonist of this 32.4 km circuit. It is a road made up of several ascents and descents that also offers a spectacular view of the high plateau landscape and a rich gastronomic offer. The 48% of the route runs over unpaved terrain, has a total of 423 meters of unevenness and a maximum slope of 9.4% inclination.
It is a route suitable for amateur cyclists eager to explore new connections in their routes. The route, mostly flat, is an escape from everyday life, noise and pollution; and an appointment with nature in which in addition to exercise, you can live memorable gastronomic and cultural experiences near the city.
It is known as 'Around the block' because of the circuit-shaped layout that is drawn on the map when the route is traced between Chía, Tenjo, Tabio and Chía again.
The starting point is the restaurant Palo de Agua, an excellent option for healthy food that bets on a traditional cuisine in harmony with the identity of local products, those who produce them and the effect they have on their diners. Its menu has dishes from $25,000 to $50,000 and it is one of the businesses in the region with the best rating by users.
This is already a meeting point for cyclists from all parts of Bogota and some surrounding municipalities seeking to complete the circuit. From there we will start the tour with 2 kilometers of smooth riding in the direction of the exit to Tenjo, along the La Valvanera road.
After those first pedal strokes, the road quickly slopes upwards and will put in front the first big climb that leads to the Valvanera Chapel, a hill from which you can see the panoramic view of the capital and neighboring municipalities under the framework of the Eastern Cordillera and where it is usual to see groups of tourists posing in front of that great natural wall.
This first ascent extends for approximately 4.5 kilometers and has an average slope of 5%. Afterwards there is a descent of 3.1 kilometers, and then a flat stretch that extends for at least 5.5 kilometers. This stretch is ideal for those who wish to make a stop. On the road you can find places like the Monarca Park, where you can park your bikes and enjoy a delicious chocolate bread with juice, appreciate the farm animals and then continue your journey to reach Tenjo.
Known as the mystical corner of Sabana Centro, Tenjo stands out for its archaeological and biological richness. There is the Serranía de Majui, which in Muisca means "inside you" and served as a ceremonial epicenter of the indigenous people for the reconciliation of man with himself.
Of the importance that Majui had for the indigenous people, there are traces in the petroglyphs and cave paintings, reminiscent of some pieces of Muisca gold work in the region. They also have the smallest species of hummingbird in the world and perhaps the most curious of all its attractions is the Peña de Juaica, the birthplace of the legend of the Mohán and the highest peak in the municipality, which is said to have been the scene of several sightings of alleged unidentified flying objects.
By this time we will have traveled over 14.5 kilometers and it will be time to look for the Tenjo-Tabio Variant to drive for 10.2 kilometers of relative flatness towards Tabio, next to the Río Frío or Huitaca river mouth.

This municipality offers its tourists offers such as the El Zipa thermal baths, a place of great natural beauty that according to historians was reserved in the Muisca culture for the cacique and his government entourage. Today, these hot springs are divided into two pools with temperatures between 32.5°C and 35°C. A pleasant destination to relax and enjoy immersed in these warm waters surrounded by nature.
In gastronomy, the mazamorra chiquita and the pumpkin tamale are two of the signature dishes of the municipality. Ask for them in any of the restaurants located both in the colonial center and in the rural area. You will not regret it. The final stretch of the route will take us back to Chia. Seven kilometers of ups and downs on a road in the middle of quiet farmland are the ideal setting to finish this route. A last effort with 4 kilometers to go on a climb with 12% incline ramps, followed by a couple of 7% and 8% steep slopes and a short and satisfying descent will be the announcement that we have made it.
Flying finish line:
Chía is a destination considered to be the Chibcha kingdom of the Cundinamarca region. In the Muisca mythology it was the temple where they paid tribute and worshiped one of their most important deities: the moon, Chie or Huitaca, which is why the chroniclers called it La Ciudad de la Luna (The City of the Moon). Today it is an ideal place to enjoy colonial architecture, outdoor sports and, above all, national and international cuisine.
Its wide offer has turned the municipality into a gastronomic epicenter par excellence with nearly 250 restaurants and more than 50 cafes. There we can find from the most elaborate recipe, to the typical dishes of the region, such as masato, almojábanas, chicha, merengón or all kinds of amasijos or preparations in wood oven that can be found in the central sector of the municipality.
On the other hand, there are country restaurants ideal for lunch with family or friends, among which are: Andrés Carne de Res, El Pórtico, Restaurante Colombia, El Galápago, La Finca, La Magola, La Tasca Rincón de España, La Goleta, El Despacho and El Humero Restaurante Bar. All of them offer a wide variety of dishes ranging from the typical asado and picada of the region, to the flavors of international cuisine.
