Bogota, September 2023. In an increasingly interconnected and digitized world, cybersecurity has become an unavoidable priority for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Aware of this reality, the Bogota Chamber of Commerce has taken a step forward by launching the "Guía de Pymes Ciberseguras", an essential and easy-to-apply tool to empower SMEs with basic and practical knowledge on how to protect their online business operations.

The digital age has brought countless opportunities for businesses, but it has also brought with it a growing threat: cybercrime. SMEs, in particular, have become increasingly attractive targets for cybercriminals due to their relative lack of cybersecurity preparedness. In Colombia, during the last year, 26,366 complaints were received for the crime of theft by computer and similar means, a figure that represents more than 30% of the total number of complaints received in 2022. In addition, the average annual increase in complaints to the Police Cyber Center has been close to 45% in the last 5 years. The comparison between 2019 (before the pandemic) and 2022 showed an increase of 175%.

One of the advantages of adopting cybersecurity practices is the protection of sensitive information and SME account profiles. The Cybersecure SME Guide teaches SMEs how to implement effective security measures to prevent their information, as well as that of their customers and suppliers, from falling into the wrong hands. It also presents a step-by-step guide on how to strengthen business accounts on social networks to prevent them from being impersonated and how to prevent scams via text messages or phone calls.

Ana María Fergusson, Vice President of Public-Private Articulation of the Bogota Chamber of Commerce commented that "the entity is committed to strengthening the cybersecurity of SMEs and providing them with the necessary tools to face the challenges in the ever-changing digital world. Information protection and online security are fundamental for the continued success of SMEs in the digital era.

Reducing Costs and Safeguarding Reputation

In addition to protecting information, cybersecurity also offers significant financial benefits. By taking preventive measures, SMEs can reduce the costs associated with recovering from cyber-attacks and the need for emergency technical assistance. Likewise, taking care of business reputation is essential. Cyber-attacks not only cause economic damage, but can also jeopardize customer confidence. The loss of this trust can have a devastating impact on the image and viability of the business.

The Guide also highlights the importance of complying with cybersecurity regulations, as well as the Personal Data Protection Act. Regulatory compliance not only avoids fines and penalties, but also gives SMEs a competitive advantage in a market that is increasingly aware of the importance of online security.
