Bogota, March 2025. With the aim of strengthening sports tourism and the local economy, the Tourism, Recreation and Events Cluster of the Bogota Chamber of Commerce (CCB), in alliance with the World Boxing Organization (WBO), will bring to Bogota the 38th edition of the WBO World Convention in October 2025, the event with the greatest global impact in the sector. The World Boxing Organization or WBO is one of the main organizations overseeing professional boxing at the international level. It was founded 64 years ago and aims to regulate professional boxing, promoting fair competition and the welfare of boxers. It plays a crucial role in world boxing, being one of the main entities that regulates the sport and awards titles. For this edition, which will be held at Ágora Bogotá, Convention Center, it is expected to generate around 3 million dollars, 500 to 800 new jobs during the event; as well as more than 500 attendees to the world title fight, sports academic activities, more than 150 visits to the immersive boxing experiences, and the presence of more than 30 entrepreneurs and sports businessmen from Bogotá and region, participants in the fair.
This convention, which is the meeting point of international boxing, seeks to demonstrate the impact of this sport on social inclusion, physical well-being and the development of sports talent. More than 600 participants from at least 65 countries are expected to attend, including champions, trainers and international sponsors. This event would surpass the most recent editions in San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), where more than 400 attendees participated, including boxing stars and renowned investors. Ovidio Claros Polanco, president of the CCB stated that “We are firmly committed to being strategic allies of the World Boxing Organization. From today, we will dedicate all our efforts, resources, network, programs, infrastructure and services to guarantee not only the success of this visit, but also that of the World Convention in October 2025,” he said.
Gustavo Olivieri, president of the World Boxing Organization, said: “This will be a historic convention, not only because Bogota won the venue over cities such as Budapest, Hungary or Orlando, but also because it is the first time that a world boxing organization opens its doors to the general public; this means that not only the affiliates of the organization will be present, but the community in general, opening doors and alliances so that all people who are in Bogota can enjoy this event”.
Bogota, a city ready for world boxing
For decades, Colombia and Latin America have been the cradle of world champions, and this convention will serve as a platform for the new generation of boxers. With this, Bogota projects itself as an international benchmark in this sport, as large-scale events such as this one boost key sectors, including tourism, gastronomy, commerce and transportation. According to Bogota's Secretariat of Economic Development, in 2024 major sporting and cultural events in the capital generated more than $328 billion pesos (approximately USD $80 million). This impact strengthens the local economy and evidences Bogota's potential as a venue for international events.
